Whale Monitoring
General Information
$120/person + IVA
Full Day Experience. Includes a certified Biologist or Naturalist, lunch and snacks on the boat, hydrophone to hear the whale’s songs, and material for whale monitoring Costa Rica.
Booking available from January to March and July to October.
The South Pacific of Costa Rica witnesses an incredible event: every year, 2 different populations of Humpback whales arrive to the tropical warm waters to give birth, raise their babies, and mate. From January to March, we receive the North Population, coming from Alaska, while from July to October we host the curious and friendly South Population. But that’s not all! We can also spot Pilot whales, Bryde’s whales, and more!
Experiences with a purpose
Not your typical whale watching! During our whale monitoring, we will use various innovative technologies to study and identify individuals. We will fly the drone, use our hydrophone to record and hear the whale’s songs, work on photo identification, and record any strange or interesting behaviour. Our biologists and scientists on the boat will explain many interesting facts and record data. Whales are facing many threats around the world and studying their populations is essential to improve their protection.

7:00 AM
Meeting at the MCEC to receive a lecture on whale monitoring techniques.
8:00 AM
Leaving the MCEC with our private transport to go to Sierpe where our comfortable boat and amazing captain will be waiting for us.
9:00 AM
Unforgettable boat ride through the largest wetland of Costa Rica (and maybe some wildlife spotting).
10:00 AM
Arriving in the open pacific ocean to spot whales and apply our monitoring techniques.
1:00 PM
Lunch on the boat.
2:00 – 3:00 PM
Back at the MCEC for a quick debrief, snacks and coffee/tea.
